Twitter Backgrounds

Posted on Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

twitterback_byflashByron Edwards inspired me to create my own custom twitter background. While looking around the web (thank you Google) I stumbled upon mayhemstudios (Calvin Lee). Armed with inspiration, examples and a copy of Adobe’s Photoshop CS3 I threw my self into the task.

Requirements
These dimensions come from twitter and a sample psd and or jpg files available on the web.
File Dimensions: 1600 px by 1024px
Branding Dimensions: 70 px by 587 px
Coordinates: X=20, Y=14
Horizontal position: 20 px from the left
Vertical position: 14 px from the top
File size and type according to Twitter: “Images must be smaller than 800k. GIF, JPG, PNG.”

My Advice
Download my template file and add your own content. Tweak it to your hearts content. If that isn’t good enough for you there are plenty of sample backgrounds available. Just check out some flickr sets»

Uploading Your New Twitter Background
The final step is to log-in to your Twitter account and click the Settings link located at the top of the page. On the setting page, click the Design tab and upload your new background via the Background Image field; click on the Home link at the top of the page if your background doesn’t appear.

I love custom backgrounds, but on a high-resolution screen they all look too big for the screen. As a result, half of the text is covered by the Twitter conversation window.
    That’s a bit of a shame…

  3. Uh, you mean ‘low resolution’? I have to admit, I’m pretty bad about expecting users to have a minimum of 10241X768. I remember fifteen years ago when I was designing for 800X600 and my peers thought I was nuts ;)
